Shopify POS, Lightspeed or Afosto POS? Count the card fees too

You don't choose a POS on the subscription alone. With Shopify you pay a percentage on every card payment. Afosto charges no transaction fees: you pick your own payment provider and only pay their rate.

Shopify POS, Lightspeed or Afosto POS? Count the card fees too

What does a POS cost at €50,000 in card payments a month?

One store in the Netherlands, prices excluding VAT, as of 30 September 2026. Lightspeed is not included, because the card rates of Lightspeed Payments for the Netherlands are not on their pricing page.

Assumptions

  • €50,000 revenue a month in 800 debit card payments, an average receipt of €62.50
  • Billed yearly, without hardware
  • Shopify Grow with Shopify Payments
  • Afosto POS Start with Pay. on the Professional plan

This is not a like for like comparison. The Shopify subscription also includes your webshop and stock. Afosto POS Start has no stock management; that comes with POS Pro (€299), which brings the total to €390. Want a webshop as well? Then you add the CMS Start module: with the 10% bundle discount, POS Start with a webshop costs €242.20. If you choose POS Pro at Shopify (€79 per location), the total becomes €763.

The saving depends on a payment provider with a fixed fee per card payment. On the Professional plan, Pay. charges €0.07 per debit card for a store in the Netherlands; a credit card costs €0.10 + 1.75%. On Mollie Pro (€20 a month), Maestro or V Pay costs €0.06 + 0.20% and other consumer cards €0.10 + 1.50%. If your provider charges a percentage for your cards, the saving shrinks. More than a till

What sits behind the till

For a growing retailer, the POS is one sales channel next to the webshop, marketplaces and business customers. In Afosto, all of that runs on one platform.

Store, webshop and marketplaces on one stock

Shopify and Lightspeed both come with a webshop. Afosto also pulls in orders from bol, Amazon, Kaufland and marketplaces on Mirakl, on the same stock as your store.

  • At the till you search products, orders, contacts and organizations.
  • A customer orders something in store that you have delivered to their home.
  • Returns are booked back into stock.
  • For bol, also LVB and Verzenden via bol.
Store, webshop and marketplaces on one stock

Business customers at the till

From the Serious plan, you work with customer specific prices and coupon codes at the till. Behind that sits the B2B side of the platform.

  • Organizations with their own price list and VAT details, with multiple contacts.
  • Pay on account, with a deposit or in installments.
  • You draft a quote as a concept order and turn it into an order once it's accepted.
  • The invoice follows automatically, with a credit invoice for a return, and syncs with Exact Online.

Cash drawers, daily overview and your own screen

The POS works with cash drawers and a daily overview, and staff log in with a PIN on a shared till.

  • You open or switch a cash drawer from the action menu.
  • As your operation grows, you add the OMS/WMS module: batch picking, a scan app and multiple warehouses.
  • Cash drawers and POS sessions are available through the GraphQL API, for your own till screen or ordering app.
  • API access is included in the Pro and Enterprise POS plans.

When Shopify POS or Lightspeed is a good choice

Not every store needs a platform. In these situations one of the other two fits better.

Shopify webshop, occasionally in person

your webshop already runs on Shopify and you sell at markets or events.

One supplier for everything

you want webshop, POS and payments from one supplier, and your card revenue is limited.

A till for your store

you want a store POS with stock management and a built-in webshop, and you're happy to pay through the same supplier. Then Lightspeed Retail fits.

A provider that charges a percentage

if your payment provider charges a percentage per card payment, Shopify POS can work out cheaper.
