Add Zebra ZD421

It may happen that adding a Zebra ZD421 label printer to your computer doesn’t happen automatically. You can also add it manually by following these steps.

Add on a MacOS device

Zebra printers don’t always work properly with the standard MacOS drivers. Therefore, it is necessary to install special drivers from Zebra.

Install CUPS drivers

Go to the official Zebra support site to download the drivers. Once the file is downloaded, open the .pkg file and install the drivers.

Find IP address

Make sure the printer is connected to your network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Press and hold the "Feed" button until the light blinks twice. This prints the printer’s configuration. Look for the line IP Address: x.x.x.x in the printed data.

Add printer via System Settings

Open the System Settings on your MacOS device, for example by clicking the Apple icon at the top left and then selecting "System Settings", and open "Printers & Scanners". Click on "Add printer, scanner, or fax…".

In the window that opens, you will see a toolbar at the top with options for adding a printer. Right-click (or CTRL+click) on this toolbar and choose "Customize Toolbar". Drag the "Advanced" option to the toolbar and click "Done".

Now click on the "Advanced" option in the toolbar to add the printer. Enter the following values in the fields:

  1. Type: LPD/LPR Host or Printer
  2. Device: Other Device
  3. URL: lpd://[IP_ADDRESS] (use the IP address from the printer)
  4. Name: Something like Zebra ZD421
  5. Use: Select "Select Software…" and choose the Zebra ZPL Label Printer driver

Then click "Add" to save the printer.

Check in PrintNode

The printer is now added to your system. Open PrintNode by clicking the logo at the top and selecting "Open PrintNode". Go to the "Printers" tab.
